I bought a '99 Dekerf Generation frame about four years ago and built it up as a go to bike for general twice-weekly rides. Pace rc36 Stealth forks, BB7 discs, Sram 3x9, Dia Compe levers, a real mix of stuff that was to hand. It worked a treat and gave the others a rest. Everything was fine until I cracked a chainstay, and it was back to the long suffering cinder cone until I could afford to have Bob Jackson fit the replacement supplied by Mr Dekerf, plus the respray etc, which hasn't happened yet.
What I am getting round to is the 'Why' asked by the topic. Discs is 'why'. Non of my earlier bikes have disc tabs, and wearing through rims has been a constant problem, local riding being sandy and gritty. So I needed a temporary frame to take the kit from the Dekerf, and Geezer let me have a Kona Caldera frame, stem, and bars for a very small sum of money (absolute Gent). So my 'go to' bike is currently an aluminium (ffs) Kona Caldera circa 2002, kitted out as above but now with Avid speed control levers, riser bars (yes I know, but no bar ends, which I miss) and a Brooks saddle. Its heavy but tracks well and I've become rather fond of it.
Tomorrow we go to Wales to ride the Trans Cambrian, so it'll be interesting to see how I feel after three days. The intention had been to get the Dekerf back and ready for this, but not to be, and when it does come back I cant see it returning to 'go to' duty, unless built up with rigid forks (?) Hmmmm.
Thanks for this topic Drstewie.... and Pete you know I've always loved that Ibis too.
