I had the XT version of this around 1996/7 (as soon at it came out, so somebody can correct me on the year).
It was a very nice item, well machines and shifted fantastically. I did bend it though, so beware riding this too hard, if you wish it to stay straight.
And yes, I believe there was an adapter which involved taking off the lock ring on the back of the drive side unit. My memory is fogged about the details, but if I remember the specifics, I will post them up.
EDIT; looking at the picture of the groupset cleared it up for me; there is a lock ring on the back that needs a (predictably) proprietary Shimano tool. Then, you can just swap the 4 arm ring set for the 5 arm one. They just slot on in the same way.
