what lx chainset is this?

I had the XT version of this around 1996/7 (as soon at it came out, so somebody can correct me on the year).

It was a very nice item, well machines and shifted fantastically. I did bend it though, so beware riding this too hard, if you wish it to stay straight.

And yes, I believe there was an adapter which involved taking off the lock ring on the back of the drive side unit. My memory is fogged about the details, but if I remember the specifics, I will post them up.

EDIT; looking at the picture of the groupset cleared it up for me; there is a lock ring on the back that needs a (predictably) proprietary Shimano tool. Then, you can just swap the 4 arm ring set for the 5 arm one. They just slot on in the same way.

If memory serves, it was just like any lock ring; a threaded ring, with a couple of notches in it, which the tool fitted into.

I am sure you could make one yourself if you had the means to do so.

If you really get stuck, and want some genuine Shimano tools from that era, I can source those for you here.

Definitely going to be much cheaper to improvise yourself, however, but the offer is on the table.
 
First the good news...

As others have mentioned it's M569, and all but identical to XT M739 cranks, lock ring attachment seems to be the same as XTRM952.

New outer rings are available:

Now the not so good news...

I have two M569 chainsets (one owned from new on a '98 Kona) with the original outer chainring. And now two NOS outer chainrings.

At some point, shimano changed the design slightly - on the new rings, there is more metal machined/forged/what-ever away where the lock-ring attaches. This means that the ring part of the engagement is now thinner than the crank part. Lock ring tightens against the crankarm , not the chainring - part 4 onto part 9, not part 8 here:

Hopefully the above makes sense, will try and get pictures up this evening of the difference.

It's less than 1mm needed, but a BB spacer (M952) is just a fraction too small - won't clear the engagement teeth on the crank, fine for thickness but not internal diameter.


If anybody as a suitable washer/spacer - ID ~35.6mm OD~42.5 (will check) and around 1mm thick let me know.

pics would be good to know what that's all about. its not something i'm in need of doing right now, but eventually the wear of the outer ring will concern me :)
 
So, to the person who is restoring the bike; do you still have the original Rock Shox Indy XC?

I remember my Rockhopper came with them and they were seriously dreadful. No action at all, and felt like trying to shove a grit wedge into a mouse hole made of hate. They got replaced with Marzocchi Bomber Z2 (1997/8; the first ones with the nice Aluminium machined brace and beautifully tapered dropouts, before all that ugly BAM stuff came in...)

I realise it may have been a case of me getting a duff set of Rock Shox, so would be interested to read your experiences. Please do tell!

You could try classic mini ball joint shims, they come in many different thicknesses.
I think i have some in the shed, i'll try to dig them out tomorrow :)

The ridges on the old are just marks from the lock ring. The washer/spacer would need to have an ID sufficient to clear the "locating teeth" indents, but OD to fit within the outer lip - ID35.6/OD42.5mm x1mm.

I've emailed Madison to see what they say.
