"Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after."
In my profession, photojournalism, there have been a lot of layoffs over the past two decades, and I personally have been laid off twice. After the second time I decided that I would never again have just one source of income so that if one thing was not working out or if it was pulled from under my feet I would survive. So now I have a job, (still in newspapers, some people never learn) a personal Ebay business and I sell kit for my LBS on the shop's Ebay account. It's a lot of work but I am never bored and most important I don't have huge income fluctuations.
Going back to the OP, if you have multiple income streams and the job is not fulfilling or you hate the boss, then quitting becomes an easier decision.
