Think I might try a nine-speed next new chain then. I confess to still having, on my oldest and least used bike, one of ye olde brown Sedis- Sachs chains, circa 1994. It has been off a few times for a clean and relube. I wash it in petrol (unleaded is ok, but I loved the old four star..) then heat it in an old pan with a motor oil. That gets the oil thin enough to do a proper job. Hang up to drain, wipe down etc. That little rigmarole would be a pain if I didn't enjoy it so much..

I'm using a 10 speed on a road bike - seems ok so far.
