Re:
Hi petitpal,
I have no difficulty with the Marin origins of the term mountain bike as deriving from Kelly & Fisher's "MountainBikes" company.
However it has long since become a generic term for a bicycle whose design has been modified for off-road use, including designs that have little in common with the bikes that the company sold.
The French have adopted term 'Velo Tout Terrain' (VTT) and have therefore disconnected the modern bikes/sport form the Marin origins.
Within the umbrella of the French term all possible designs, both past and present can be accommodated.
It seems to me that some people for some reason want to limit the definition of 'mountain bike' to its original 1980s US meaning. While for the rest of us it has come to be represent a very wide range of diverse bike designs and activities. Many of which were never imagined by the Marin pioneers.
