what grips on a retro?? are lock-ons a sin?

as title folks, I am undertaking a couple of builds at the moment and was wondering what the majority of people think about the importance of grips.

casting my mind back, i used to have rubber slide on grips from club roost, fred salmon & GT amongst others but on my current 'complete' bike (an early orange gringo) I've got a set of club roost 'go fast' lock-ons which i must admit, i do prefer for a few reasons.

so, question 1 is simple, is it a sin to go for a new grip on a retro bike?

question 2 is just as simple.... if not, what good alternatives do i have that are available today that will be comfortable and won't split after 6 months of use.

Get what works for your RIDE but if you are looking for comfy try a set of Oury grips. They're 90's retro correct, available new and come in a bunch of colours. And yes you can also get them for lock on clamps.

Enjoy!!

There are plenty of good retro grips still available like ODI Tomac Attacks and onZa Ules.

Lock ons are good and do have their place but you should have absolutely no problems with regular grips on a retro or indeed a modern bike.

Ride your dream. Make sure you fit matching pedals.... Don't fit the TEsco Gel saddle cover. :-(

i wrote the book on matching pedals!!! (and i've got some grips coming from elite in the post, thanks for the heads up)

if it wasn't for the fact they've been on everything i've owned for the last 14ish years i would consider replacements

Aggggggh am I the only one that think Oury grips are the ispaz of the grip world and wholly inappropriate?

Just get something that feels right they'll all be toast if you stack it.

I have to say, after ruining several pairs of grips during removal I thought "to hell with it" and bought some lockons.

Ended up with ODI Yeti which are sort of retro...they work flawlessly. Pricey at £18 but theoretically it will pay for itself over time.

I thought that but they soften up with time and I like the fact that they're nice & fat for my long fingers
