What footwear do you use on flat pedals

For years I've been happy doing my own thing on my mtb and road bike but this year i would like to make a bit of an effort and to go on some proper trails.

So i'm going to hang up my old adidas trainers which have served me well and I'd like to purchase a new pair of mtb shoes but for flat pedals with the grub screw style grippers and NOT clipless.

So what do you chaps use without me raiding the kids piggy banks.

I must say I'd happily keep my adidas trainers but my feet soles gave been hurting in them recently so I could do with sturdier soles and good grip.

Best old school shoe are Vans with waffle tread. :xmas-big-grin:
Best new school shoes are 5.10. :xmas-big-grin:
Used waffle tread soles most my life, can't fault them, and some cheaper brands use the tread too. Good reliable option :xmas-cool:
Climbed most my life and there is no stickier rubber than 5.10 rubber , no matter what other companies tell you. Used to use mountain approach shoes on my downhill bike and found them to grip like no other (with waffle soles you can shuffle your feet around on the pedal a bit, with 5.10 you have to lift your foot to move it) 5.10 now make MTB footwear, very expensive, unless you can get trade, and in my experience not nessecary. :xmas-cool:
Which pedal can make a huge difference too, not as grippy as each other despite looking similar. :xmas-big-grin:

Re:

Any shoe designed for skateboarding will work well - they have reinforced soles that are less prone to flex. And they're usually styled along the retro Adidas trainers theme.

Re:

Shimano AM45 are hard to beat for the price.
I use a pair of Teva Links, cheap when I got them not sure if they still make them?
I always found "street" trainers gripped well but we're a bit too flexy for me.
The pedals you use also make a big difference, Shimano Saint, DMR V8/V12 are my favourites.

Dmr v8s and salomon approach type shoes. Grip really well on the spikes but watch you shins!

Re:

Vans or air walk, the later are cheap at sports direct. Served me well in the Alps this year and only cost £20

Re:

Thanks chaps as there's plenty for me to look into.

I've got shimano saints and dx on my daily mtb. I actually find the dx grip my current worn adidas trainers better than the saints but the saints look better on my full suspension.

Also you lot are correct in that just casual trainers do flex too much so this is also something I'd like put right with new footwear
