What about the 'W123' series Mercs in terms of size/price/availabilty??, the only one I like 'bar' the Pagoda roof derivatives

Volvo 245 GLT. Great cars. Strong as a tank, reliable, pretty rust resistant, comfy and you can get huge roof racks for them for buttons. Quite thirsty though but otherwise a great car. You would get the very best for your budget too and apart from servicing you won't need to spend a penny on it for years. We used one as a tow/ chase/ recce car for 3 years when I was doing a lot of rallying. That car got some serious abuse (including bouncing through a Welsh ditch at 90mph during one event) and we didn't even change the oil on it once.

there is even one on Gran Turismo- they are that cool!

Had a few of them. They stopped the carbs in 81 so all from then are Es, though of course they didn't call it the E Class until much later.

Still think for that money I would go for a ten year old or younger car with the lowest miles/best history I could find, and of course the nice big booty.

Another +1 for the 98-05 Passat. Huge boot and not that thirsty. Mine's only done 45K so another 15 years at least ahead of it. Which is handy as I can't afford to change it until then. The problem with the Golf/Octavia estates is that the wheel arches protrude a fair way in.

I bought a 1989 one with no rust, history and only 70k for under £1500. Doesn't miss a beat, started first time during the -12 weather and the classic insurance and n depreciation offsets poor fuel. If you are doing big mileages then a diesel would be worth the extra outlay.

later models are far better on fuel but can rust like a 70s Fiat

the later E220 saloon would get up to 38mpg, on lpg though they will only do around 25.
