What do you hate seeing on a gorgeous retro bike?

I use riser bars. I reckon it would be way cooler to have a flat bar just like when I raced xc. But then I was 17 and the using a flat bar and negative headset was what you HAD to use on competition to handle the steepness of some hills and to look as pro as the rest of the others (looks count too!:D).
My group of friends didnt race, so having a riser and DH fork was all that they needed. On the fun rides my xc setup was horrible for going down in comparison with theirs. When I quit racing, i sold my road bike and joined the rise cause, and decided to have some fun. Today im 32 and back pains are here, so if i can avoid that and adding extra joy to my ride.. why not ? : )

OK, we're gonna have to agree to disagree then, because I'd say 90% of early '90s MTBs are MASSIVELY improved by fitting a shorter stem and a set of low/mid risers. I'm talking function and actual mountainbiking, not aesthetics and car park posing.

I never said that I prefer risers because they look better (I only said they look better than a jacked-up stem). Added weight and flex are clearly not a given either, as I'm comparing using risers with having a longer headtube (and therefore heavier, flexier frame).

risers and a shorter stem do work well on old bikes, and i have tried them on mine. it handled better and was easier to ride.

that said, i have gone back to my narrow 3 degree hyperlites and a 140mm 0 degree atac stem. it just looks "right" to my eye, but also reminds me of what the bikes were like to ride in my 'youf'

i keep my modern hardtail with wide bars, great handling, discs etc for when i want to ride a nice handling bike.

Riser bars have been around cycling for as long as, er cycling... So, if you want to use them, why not.

And mudguards are great but crud catchers are not...

The perfect bicycle!

In my defence; I may be over 6' tall but I have short legs and long arms so I like my frames set up this way (aesthetics may also have a certain say in it too ;) ), I put the yellow canti's on because a: they're Ritchey style and b: I've Maguras on my other cro-mega and I like yellow brakes, and BiTD I had the matching neon pink mudguards on my white cro-mega so just couldn't resist these when they came up on eBay!
