What are the affects of a chain that

is too long on indexing etc? All i can find out on the web is a chain that is too short. Which i know already.

Might shift a bit slower, maybe be a bit noisier that's about it.
Or flap around on small/small if it's really far too long.

Should be (slightly) more efficient due to lower tension in the return side (fraction of a watt!)

If you know your chain is toooooo long why have you not taken a link out (one at a time) until you get to the correct length for your gear ratio

I’m guessing you can only find info on line for chains that are to short (tight) as it’s not easy to add new links especially to a part worn chain and your looking at replacement,

Anyway slack chains that are too long weigh more, look poop, bounce around and hit your frame and tend to fall off - great combination you have there so what’s the attraction ?

^ just being a smart arse, you can't take "a link out(one at a time)" .... it needs to be two links at least (but you can have plenty beer or coffee between the said two). You could faff with a half link, just to muddy the waters if so inclined.

Eitherway, too long is when on small sprocket - small chainring the rear mech cannot take up all the chain slack.

Otherwise, I can't see this effecting indexing unless we are talking really really droopy slack.

I have relaid advice to the workmate who asked me. And told them to remove a few links. But not too many. Thanks
