What are 'shot in' seat stays?

This is something I've wanted to know for ages.

What are 'shot in' seat stays? I know they look different to old school seat stays (e.g., 1992 Raleigh frames compared to 1993 later), but what makes them stronger and what does the term 'shot in' mean?

Shot in seat stays go into the frame. Not sure if that's why they are called that. Like shot through holes, or is that just me :?:

No, they're called 'S' bend stays, and are something totally different. 'Shot in stays' generally refer to the point and manner of intersection with the frame as mentioned within the Hetchins link above.
