Well that didn't last long. Ressurection: Marin IFT.

Bought a Marin bike last monday and I was taking it apart.
Turns out the frame is cracked.
I take it that I'm SOL? Can't repair these can you, realistically and safe I mean.
Really not very happy.

It's repairable but definitely not financially viable for what it is sadly

im afraid you've only bought yourself a wall hanger. sure its repairable but not worth it unless you really want an ift.

always check the photos very carefully before you buy

When I picked it up it was dark, really dark.
There was no way for me to check the frame as someone was driving me and we needed to go quick sadly.
So bummed because after atleast a year of searching for myself I finally found frame I wanted to build on that was big enough.
Well back to the search I guess.

I'm not married to the IFT but the 20,5" frames are hard to come by it seems.
Prolly have a local welder try to "fix" it so I can build it and ride it for a bit.
Maybe the Marin frames aren't even my thing. (I'm going to use it as an MTB)

What the luck. Before giving up, I would at least seek a few estimates on repair to at least see if risk is worth the reward. I mean...you have been searching for a year; a rhetorical question: what is your time worth to you? I forget the thread, but some other dude just went through a similar experience with tubing around the seat post of a frame he was too much in love with to give up on, had the problematic area welded and he's as happy as a clam...and with the bike together turned out pretty sweet.

You don’t necessarily have to write that frame off.. I’ve had cracked ally frames re-welded in the past without any problems. Drop it off with a couple of bottles of beer/cider to your local fabricators and ask them to run a bead of fresh weld along the crack. Chances are they’ll do it in their lunch break for £10-20 and you’ll be away.

And then ream the headtube and check the headset is still round and to the correct dimensions...

I had one that cracked and had it repaired. As soon as i put the headset cup in it went again. So i chucked it away.
Its a shame that they’re so prone to cracking.
Get an early version if you can. They’re less likely to break.

to be honest it looks like a hobnob that you where supposed to snap in half but it accidentally shattered into many pieces

but I would go preserve the Marin, fix it in a way you can and save another bike from the tip

I hope it was not expensive. Ift frames can be sometimes quite cheap here, maybe it's the best to buy an other one, if possible, and you are after that specific frame.
But i would go after a cromo Marin...
