Good point about hosting. Although, as long as you have access it doesn't matter who hosts it really. I would, however, make sure you control the domain name. And it helps if it's separate to the hosting. If you don't already own your domain, you could buy it through freeparking. It's then easy to point the domain at whatever space you want to use.

Eye web look good. Highlandflyer is right, lots of cowboys out there.
Also, the guys that are good at building websites aren't always good at designing them, and vice versa.

edit, wife advises....If its just a 6 page website that her company would update for you on an update fee basis, it could be as little as £500 for the site, but for a full content managed system that you have full access to, would be around £2000, hosting included.
