I have a set of xt SPD's that I just cannot stay clipped into. I'm pretty sure I've wound the float right down.

Do the plates wear down enough to stop clipping?

Hell yeah, they'll do a season of moderate to heavy use then need replacing.
AFAIK the jaws on the pedal usually give up the ghost after 4 or 5 years.

Or at least the operation will be sloppy as hell and not at all useful, some will carry on well past this point and just live with it.

If you have a waggly pedalling style or use them on something like a stop start commute, they'll go quicker, if your are pretty up and down and don't unclip much, they'll last longer.

Yes. The cleats on my shoes are getting worn and the opposite is occuring in that the left side is needing more twist to disengage. Although i fitted stainless screws due to having original screwes rusting in, i still dread replacing them as the hexagonal hole will be well shagged by now.

Re:

Try some new cleats first, they do wear, faster than the pedal plate, also I think they do different spd cleats so make sure you have the right ones.

From experience Shimano cleats last a good few years, my Crank Bros cleats by comparison wore in around a year

Got more than a few different shimano pedals jimo, and the cleats sit happily in those. It's just these XT ones. Thanks for thinking of some alternatives though.

I may still try some new cleats anyway as most of my pedals are wound pretty tight
