Wear your helmet...??

- why don't we see an education lesson of a helmut being struck with a lump hammer; isn't that more real world compelling than a egg inside one and being dropped on the floor at about 9.8
ive tried they wont let me...ive even tried the old base ball bat and watermelon routine..but they wave me away

on a more serious note...i have tried to make the lessons a bit more like real life but i get looks of terror of the teachers when i suggest better ways to show the kids...according to them all ten year old boys are delicate little flowers who couldnt possibly see a watermelon get abused....

I bought a helmet last year, used it 3 or 4 times and couldnt get on with it so its now an ornament in the garage, sorry.

I'm of the opinion you should wear a helmet, if you don't want to then don't come crying to me when it goes tits up.

A little while ago I was going to work, when I came around a roundabout to see a lady flat on her back in the middle of the road, being tended to by, luckily enough,a nurse. There was also a little girl bawling her eyes out being comforted on the side of the road. They had been clipped by a car going around the roundabout. The lady on her back, who if not unconscious was, at the very least, severely concussed had not been wearing a helmet. I'm guessing but it was probably because it would f*ck her hair up. The little girl was wearing a helmet and had been on the seat on the back of the bike that had been hit. She was by now inconsolable as too the state of her mother.

The ambulance turned up and I left.

Is it really fair on people that witness or have to clear up after these sort of accidents, that are made 100x worse by people not wearing helmets?

99% of the time I'm sure it's for vanity purposes, sad really!

What if a car knocks you over whilst walking? Do you wear a helmet when crossing roads on foot? (Serious question- I'm not trying to give you more daft ideas about personal safety).

I'd say you were the moron tbh.

Why are helmet wearers such helmets? "I don't care if you don't but..." demonstrating clearly that in fact they do care quite a bit. Otherwise why make an issue of it on a messageboard and call other users morons?

Lots of pros and cons

Cycle helmets work by dissipating and reducing the impact and shock delivered to the brain by it slamming into your skull.

They work in some situations but not all. Saying they do or do not save lives is difficult to quantify.

Yes loads of people have been killed wearing them - usually in cases where they would have lost their life anyway- the human body despite its ability to absorb punishment is pretty easily damaged.

If you'd had a helmet on the chances are the helmet edge that sticks out would have pushed your spine over far enough to snap

Unlikely a cycle helmet will deform and brake up - absorbing and dissipating the impact force and reducing them through sacrificial destruction. For it to have made a difference I imagine would have had to be several inches thick.

DR's will always play it save and overstate damage and understate recovery - it'sd in their nature and their job (you cant give false hope or an overly optimistic prognosis or you'd ahve a lot of very dissapointed patients)
