Wear your helmet...??

i wear one as having flown through two car windows now, one with and one without a helmet on, i definitely hurt more without a helmet.

Perhaps i'm lucky? But every accident i've ever had and there have been a fair few on and off the bike. But never felt a thing. One minute i'm awake then next minute i'm in hospital or picking my self up off the ground.

everyone has a choice i chose to wear one (one car bump and numerous smaller lack of skill related off's have proven their worth to me) what you choose to do is your own thing.

Research has shown them to have benefit, though research has shown that car drivers get close to riders with them on so he giveth wit one hand and taketh away with the other. (in a purely care on cyclist scenario) even if a car isn't involved it cant hurt - i know mine has saved my mush and bonce from nasty scrapes.

Well - there's two sides.
If I get hit by a car whilst riding safely, legally and sensibly - without a hemet on - I could be penalised financially?? Hmmm. We always feel miffed about being told what to do.

But on the other hand - I've spoken to some of the kids who don't wear helmets - "they look stupid" - to which I usually respond that they'd look worse sitting in a chair dribbling for the rest of their life

That kinda makes the point

I'm constantly amazed at the number of people who "feel it safer" to ride with a helmet, not wearing gloves.....along with high heeled shoes on metal bear-trap pedals on a rainy day listening to a mp3 player. Come on people, your hands will go down about 90% first to save your head. A helmet is no substitute to riding with your wits about you in traffic either - sometimes you've simply got to claim road real-estate even if it means hooligan riding at appropriate times.

I personally don't wear a helmet; but I would if I'm on a rocky off-road venture or ride in a road peloton as the calculated risks and consequences are high.

A helmet law would get me to go to another country to be honest; complete invasion on acceptable personal risk taking by some back handed gits from the "safety / fear" industry wining and dinning plump car hogging chaufer driven politicians who want to capitalise on the evening papers scare story. Wake up. Rant over.

i've never worn one on a bike, but i've found every time i've come off my face/head is usually protected more by my natural reaction to cover my face with my hands & elbows...

Maybe i've just been lucky but i've never done any damage to my head not even so much as a scrape, my hands are covered in scar damage though...maybe i should wear gloves.

I also read that bicycle helmets do pretty much bugger all in terms of protection, i know that motorbike helmets have come along leaps and bounds so if they could produce something which gave that sort of protection i would definitely consider wearing it...but its all a weight issue i suppose.

I remember people being similarly unimpressed with the introduction of safety belt laws.

Now I wouldn't ever drive by choice without one.

It totally pisses me off when I see people with their kids cycling A) Behind them B)Without helmets on.

I have totally got into discussions with them when I see this, the same way I have waved drivers over because they have kids without restraints in their car.

There is a way of approaching people about their irresponsible behaviour, I have rarely had a negative reaction.

When I last had the bravado balls, as a teen, I had serious offs without helmets on on scramblers, and several concussions when kayaking and surfing. Looking back I am surprised to be alive to be honest.

My last off on a motorbike was at very low speed, but the fact it was a tall traillie meant I was swung down into the road, and without my helmet I would have been in hospital for a while. Luckily the lane I fell into was void of vehicles, or I would imagine I would be finding it tricky to post this reply.

So in summary, it may be your legal option to go without a helmet, as it is to do so in many states in the US for motorcycling.

However, you are irresponsible. You have people who care about you and you owe it to them to consider not winding up with serious head injuries for the sake of feeling the wind blowing through your skull, from ear to ear where most people have something to prevent it passing through.

End of.
