Captain Kirk's thoughts:
reading through all this and i get the feeling that where some people are pro wearing - and where there is strong sentiment towards others that aren't - i get the feeling its just through a nurturing respect - worrying about others safety, or indeed the feelings of those people closely related to anyone who may be severely injured, should they have the unfortunate experience of an accident without wearing a helmet.
I wear a helmet whenever i'm riding my bike. short or long trip.
i don't have a problem with people that choose not to, regardless of whether it is a law or not.
For those who don't wear a helmet and consider themselves lucky or think they posses the reactionary skills to help avoid any incidents, i would think it is only a matter of time before you see the reason why perhaps wearing a helmet
may have been a wiser choice. Just because you've had no such injury without a helmet doesn't mean you are any safer without one.
i could say that taking drugs is fine, or drinking and driving is no more dangerous than driving sober, because I've done it many times before without incident or serious consequence (i don't do this - its for arguments sake only...
). But it only takes that one time to change it all and considering life is too random to maybe figure out when ones luck may run out, maybe wearing a helmet isn't too bigger sacrifice for me to make, to help prevent something that 'might' happen.
that's the reason we take out insurance policies right? in case shit happens?
the human brain isn't really 'designed' to deliver the reactions required when travelling at speeds much faster than walking pace (hence why not everyone on the planet is a formula 1 driver) - and that being said, the human body isn't 'designed' to cope with impacts at speeds much faster either. which is why you don't see many [if any] fatalities with walking pace 'pedestrian collisions'. (although i'm sure someone on here will dig something up to try and poo poo this
)
riding a bike
may increase your chances of an accident through 'not seeing' or 'not reacting' - which could be related by the speeds involved. all of which can contribute toward an incident with injury.
i wear my helmet 'in case shit happens'. and you are a fool if you think that shit will never happen to you.
So as long as my helmet is on, i feel that little bit safer (even if it does make me look a bit of a fool)
