Wear your helmet...??

Considering the number of 'Won't wear one...' replies there have been; and equally the 'Won't be told what to do...', I distinctly remember there being a footnote to the recent 'Peaks Meet...' page that said:-

:: Strictly no helmet – no ride.

...so I guess it depends who's doing the telling??

Is that not to do with RetroBike being affiliated to British Cycling, and therefore to this: http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/static ... y-Points-0

They only 'Strongly recommend...' which is not quite the same thing is it ;)

I'm sure John has a reason for wording it that way. Pretty sure people also ride without a helmet on RetroBike meets though.

Yes they do. On one IoW meet their was more riders with no hat than with.

Here is anther sport which some do wear & some don't.

Me i'd stay on the ground

And if I had someone constantly belaying me to a higher point so I couldn't actually hit the ground when I came off my bike, I might do away with the helmet too.

When climbing a helmet's likely to save you from (smallish) rocks falling on your head, not protection if you fall off, then it'll be gravity that'll mush you up... and if you land head first... well...

Maybe I should design an anti-splat shield - huge inflatable body armour that's triggered by massive fear induced adrenalin rushes... now where's that Dragon's Den application form...

That bunny hopping over a chain thing wasn't really what the gist of this topic's about... more general 'normal' commutes and trails... they'd also need a full face helmet to protect from that slam-down... that's gotta sting a bit?!

Yeah, well i think offroad its a bit of a must given the likelyhood of finding a tree but urban i dont think it necessary, chances are if youre in a serious accident on the roads the damage will be from blunt trauma :?
So when youre paralysed from the neck down be thankful your helmet is making you completely aware of the situation youre now in

motorbikes and cars are a completely different kettle of fish, although I do think the safety belt law is a pile of poo to be honest. They should legally have to supply them with cars and children under 18 should have to wear them...but once you are old enough to make an informed choice it should be your own decision not someone elses..

Hmm, but what about the other poor taxpayers having to pay for intensive care, and cosmetic surgery for people who have failed to use seat belts because "oooh, it creases my clothes!"
Fair enough if you pay your own way on medical care. I'm not so sure if you don't.

A former housemate of mine was horribly injured after going through a windscreen (cruddy Renault seatbelt failed) and the picture was not pretty. She had two years of cosmetic surgery, after two years of waiting for the huge scars to form properly.

Captain Kirk's thoughts:

reading through all this and i get the feeling that where some people are pro wearing - and where there is strong sentiment towards others that aren't - i get the feeling its just through a nurturing respect - worrying about others safety, or indeed the feelings of those people closely related to anyone who may be severely injured, should they have the unfortunate experience of an accident without wearing a helmet.
I wear a helmet whenever i'm riding my bike. short or long trip.
i don't have a problem with people that choose not to, regardless of whether it is a law or not.
For those who don't wear a helmet and consider themselves lucky or think they posses the reactionary skills to help avoid any incidents, i would think it is only a matter of time before you see the reason why perhaps wearing a helmet may have been a wiser choice. Just because you've had no such injury without a helmet doesn't mean you are any safer without one.
i could say that taking drugs is fine, or drinking and driving is no more dangerous than driving sober, because I've done it many times before without incident or serious consequence (i don't do this - its for arguments sake only...:) ). But it only takes that one time to change it all and considering life is too random to maybe figure out when ones luck may run out, maybe wearing a helmet isn't too bigger sacrifice for me to make, to help prevent something that 'might' happen.
that's the reason we take out insurance policies right? in case shit happens?

the human brain isn't really 'designed' to deliver the reactions required when travelling at speeds much faster than walking pace (hence why not everyone on the planet is a formula 1 driver) - and that being said, the human body isn't 'designed' to cope with impacts at speeds much faster either. which is why you don't see many [if any] fatalities with walking pace 'pedestrian collisions'. (although i'm sure someone on here will dig something up to try and poo poo this :p )
riding a bike may increase your chances of an accident through 'not seeing' or 'not reacting' - which could be related by the speeds involved. all of which can contribute toward an incident with injury.
i wear my helmet 'in case shit happens'. and you are a fool if you think that shit will never happen to you.
So as long as my helmet is on, i feel that little bit safer (even if it does make me look a bit of a fool)
