Wanted 9 speed hack from Mountain Bike Action back in '92ish

Does anyone remember the hack to make the rear sprocket 9 speed, someone used an ultegra rear hub and also the lockring/sprocket component??

Yes, but it was an 8-speed mod. XT-shifter have a secret click in it so it was only matter of building a rear wheel with road hub and make your own cassette with off-road gearing.

Still running the very set up on my Clockwork - untouched since that mod was illustrated. Back then Ultegra turned 8 speed before XT so you just removed the XT freehub from your XT hub and replaced it with an Ultegra one and swapped a few washers IIRC. On the cassette you just added a cog and altered the spacers too.
