Wagon Wheels , Just an Inbred now!

Re:

A small update.

Been out a lot with the weather improving.

Problems, caffe latex sealant did not!, TBH had the same on my SS but thought it may have been the rim/tyre combo.

Regularly got to the bike and find a flat front or rear.

Although the Stan's 26er strips also didn't work as well as I was told!

So new 29er strips, filed some burrs from the inside of the rims and Stan's sealant and I have not had to put air in the tyres for a month :)

Still have the bouncy forks on, tweaked settings slightly and very happy, they will now stay on until after Fort William holiday.

The tyres are behaving well now it has dried out a bit, probably good all purpose tyres rather than wet specific which makes sense I guess.

Been to the North Downs, it's very stable at speed but does need a bit more muscle at said speed to steer, it's as if the wheels are gyroscopes that want to go straight on!

I'm sure I will get used to that and it's the only negative I can think of now.

Re:

Great thread and a great bike. I've had a small framed 29er [KTM Race] for nearly a year now and overall I prefer it to 26 inches, the exception being scary downhill rocky sections where my lack of talent needs full suspension.
Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying the ride.

Re:

Many thanks for the offer, sadly I have had things arranged for me this Sunday :-(

But I will come along to the next gathering, I may even keep up for the first mile :)

Re:

Well I have never messed with bikes so much over such a short period!

Didn't take the Orange on holiday for various reasons but did hire a couple of 29er Specialized which just felt right.

A major irritant on the Orange was that the rear drop outs were not vertical, so occasionally the wheel would pull to one side, always at awkward moments, like the middle of a roundabout once!

So back from hols and find a Carve frame in medium (same size as hired....I thought).

Quick build up and all seemed fine, looked lovely (in my eyes) and was among the quickest and lightest mountain bikes I have owned.........and I didn't like it :(

It just felt big (bigger than the Rockhopper I hired) TBH I was devastated, I really tried to like it.......but no.

So another frame..............

But now very happy.........and low tech.

OneOne Inbred, transferred most stuff over but needed a fork so purchased a Surly Krampus which is slightly longer and leaves room for a 3" tyre should I want to go that way.

It's maybe a little heavy (but so am I!) and the mud clearance at the rear isn't great but I instantly liked it from the first ride, as they say, it's a bike for riding.

Seems sizing on a 29er for someone like me with short legs has to be pretty specific, the Orange was a 15" and felt a bit small, the Gary Fisher Rig SS I have is a medium 17" and feels fine (but Fisher sizing is wierd), the hired Rockhopper was 17" and felt fine, the medium Carve was 17.5" and felt big, my Genesis is a 16" and feels perfect as does the OnOne which is also a 16"........sorted.....finally :D :D :D

Re:

Had to get some camera kit ready for a job on Saturday and the Inbred was just sitting there ready to be a test model.

Just had to do commuter duties for a few days due to puncture woes on my road bike.

Not messed with the spec at all......surprising for me!!

Looks like a 3" tyre would not only fit into the fork but also wouldn't upset the geometry too much?

I've currently got a Krampus fork/Knard tyre on the front of a 26" long travel hardtail frame (FireEye Flame) but been wondering if I could transplant the front end onto a 29er Inbred. Yours makes it look pretty hopeful.

Re:

Yup, recon it would be fine, personally I think the On-One is fairly steep and the longer fork makes it work well for me.

Re:

A little evolution.

I started commuting by bike again, using my old Pipedream 26er, but did not feel great, had to use P clips for rack and panniers....it all just felt a bit wobbly and twitchy so after using the Inbred and haversack the decision was made.

Strangely this tied in with a problem with the wheels tyres on the Genesis...basically they stopped sealing which probably is not surprising as they were road rims with 2.3 tyres.

The Inbred had Charge wheels which are actually quiet good and probably should be on the Genesis which is mostly used off road.

So that freed up the Alex wheels which took the Vitorias I had left over from the Giant 29er hybrid thing.

Bought a cheepo adjustable rack (which is superb), slapped on the mudguards with a bit of rack mount on the front to work with the long forks and a few cable ties at the back.

Wanted to be able to make a quick change to off roader if necessary.

Very pleased how it works, this is such a versatile frame.
