Wagon Wheels , Just an Inbred now!

I have been dilemma ing about a 29er for ages, have finally decided to do it.

Being old and slow I think it will be right, looking for smoothness and comfort, plus some of the trails on the surrey hills are getting very rough between roots and braking bumps.

Have bought a Clockwork frame, £150 brand new from Bike Scene

I have stumpy legs and like plenty of clearance so have gone for a small frame. Not sure if that's right yet.

Was going to remove the stickers and go retro Orange stickering but they are all lacquered over, although it is growing on me, in fact the finish is excellent.

Had mixed reviews but we will see.

Although it does look reeeeeeaaly small at the mo!

But not so bad with the seatpost and saddle from my road bike slotted it at correct height.

Build will be XT and Hope brakes from my Ragley, wheels Charge Saucer, tyres On-One Smorgesbord and a non bouncy fork, probably carbon.

Waiting on the postman for the next few days now....................

Re: Wagon Wheels with Clockwork content New Build

Good choice, I know there are a number of people that hate this bike due to it not being steel but using the clockwork name, I personally can't see the problem, I can think of loads of MTB names from the past that have "moved on" to different things/bikes.

Anyway I really like mine, best bike I have had for ages and as good as the £3000 whyte I rode, XC with added fun.

hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Re: Wagon Wheels with Clockwork content New Build

Looked at those myself as I live locally but they had no 17.5inch frames left... Sure it will build into a nice bike, they seem to get some really good deals on Orange frames...

Re: Wagon Wheels with Clockwork content New Build

Well a week off and not much progress :(

Ordered some mirrors for a truck and they came next day, anything bicycle related seems to be taking ages, or I'm just being impatient...........almost certainly :)

But the headset arrived and I have fitted..........

Sorting what was needed was education!! But helped immensely by Hope's website.

Tried to show the pearl in the paint which is under really deep lacquer.

And the wheels have arrived, which are really nice, very pleased, although I may de-sticker them.

After checking Stan's website found I could use my 26er rimstrips so those are fitted ready for the eventual arrival of the tyres............... and fork...............

Re: Wagon Wheels with Clockwork content New Build

Well I'm getting really grumbly now.... :(

Forks arrived last night at about 7.00!! A bit weird but anyway all very good, got them fitted and found a Hope Head Doctor does not fit, oh well can use that elsewhere.

Today slotted in a pair of 26er wheels in the absence of the 29er tyres which are obviously hitch hiking there way to me....

With bars and stem on I can get an idea of size and I think it will be about right, already the front looks pretty high so I see an inverted stem in the future.

Thence started the build with the BB, then stopped shortly after..........

Drive side started threading in by hand, almost all the way, about 3 mm left and it tightened, so a bit with the BB spanner and it got very tight, so screwed it out, must be a burr in the thread as it has foooo'd the thread in the Hope BB so badly it will not now thread in properly.

I have done loads of BB's so pretty sure it was not me threading it in wrong, especially as it went in by hand most of the way.

I rarely swear, even to myself, but even now an hour later my head is not a good place to be..........

So off to the LBS for thread tapping and a new BB.

I find building a bike really therapeutic, hopefully next weekend will be better.......and I will have the tyres

Re: Wagon Wheels with Clockwork content New Build

Good luck, I'm sure it will all be fine next week! :) Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Re: Wagon Wheels with Clockwork content New Build

Well a little bit happier now, back from LBS with retapped BB and bearings fitted, but I still have to fettle one of the dropouts to allow an axle in and out without force!

Maybe the deal was a little too good!

Still waiting for the tyres  Apparently they were returned to the senders.......hmmmmm.....heard that one before.

But this weekend should a build fest :D

Re: Wagon Wheels with Clockwork content New Build

Intrigued about this. Looking forward to seeing it finished (as I'm sure you are).

Re: Wagon Wheels with Clockwork content New Build

...its always the simple jobs that end up fooking up! I share you pain! But I think a good choice to try out the apparent "fad" that is 29er bikes...I bloody love em! They suit my ride style and roll so nicely...be interested to see what you think when the bike is fully built.

Re: Wagon Wheels with Clockwork content New Build

Well the tyres finally arrived :D , TBH I have normally had good service from the suppliers.

Just got them fitted to the rims and inflated tubeless, they were not easy, although folding, the bead seemed pretty solid, in the end no valve core and blasting with an airline got them beaded, although the rear would pop out again as soon as I released pressure, got there in the end and they seem to be staying up OK, according to the t'internet they hold pressure well tubeless, so it must be true!

Anyway quickly threw them on the frame, (after fettling the rear dropout with a file to enable the wheel in and out  )

Forks in with available stem and bars, loads of spacers as I need to be sure before I cut the steerer.

The stem is a 65 from the Ragley, which will be fine for trying out, I want to match the reach of my singlespeed and that will need a 80/90mm which is not too bad, although pretty untrendy now.

Flat bars will be essential but I shouldn't need to invert the stem which is good.

To continue my untrendyness (??!!) barends will also be fitted.

Most of my rides involve road mileage between the off road bits so this will be very much an XC setup.

Quite pleased so far, being a shorty had held me back from 29ers but I don't think the proportions are too bad.

For reference these tyres are 2.25, I recon the frame will take 2.3 OK, any more would be risky.
