Retro Newbie
Hi all.

I've had this bike in my shed for a few years, I just don't get the use out of it. I'm trying to find out a bit more about it, might consider selling it on to someone that could make better use of it.

Are these old MTB's considered any good?

Despite wanting a bit of setting up in terms of brakes and gears, it's surprisingly light and lovely to ride.

Re:

A thing of beauty. My choice was between one of these and a GT Karakoram in 1997. I went with the GT, cos I thought mixed group sets were strange at the time.

With hindsight, Joe Murray cleverly put together an unbelievable package for the money. Much lighter and better to ride than a £450 bike at the time had any right to be.

That's lovely to hear. It is lovely to ride. As much as I'd love to keep it, it's sacrilege for it to live in my shed, I don't have the skill or the time to get the best out of it. What might this one be worth?

It has (I think) a 16" frame, Bontrager hubs/rims. It's not perfect cosmetically, but I'm thinking someone could make a lovely retro ride out of it.

Coincidentally, I had an early GT Karakoram when I was 16, which would have been around 1990-1991? It was the red splatter paintwork one with the hefty u-brake. I literally worked my ass off to save for that, it ended up getting stolen practically from right under my nose. I watched the guy ride off on it.

Just noticed, you're from Norfolk. What part?

Diss - my choice of bikes was at Madgetts :D

Aaaah! My GT came from Bryants on St Benedicts in Norwich. I remember that they dismantled the factory build and rebuilt it by hand before I picked it up. It was beautifully set up.

Is Bryant's still going? I know it was gutted by a fire 12 years ago

No, it got converted into a Restaurant called 'The Bicycle Shop'. Despite a cute appearance, I don't think it's all that.

Pretty strange too that I bought my GT from them and it got stolen from outside their shop.
