Don't give up trying to get those files back, if one program doesn't work, try another, you need specialist programs to delete something permanently, so you'll get em back.
even if you only manage a partial recovery of a certian file (a jpg or wrd etc) there will be another program to recover that.
one thing though, it will be best to use a different computer really, as the more that's written on that hdd the less likly you'll have a clean recovery. either over network, or plug the drive in to another pc.

I suggest you clean and delete any saved restore points,do a couple more scans then set a new restore point from there

Did you get your files back yet and is it the programms instead.
If so then it's because you used a system restore. These are used as a last resort (normally) and wipe the drive and start over again, though if you used the VISTA repair feature? then you should not have lost anything.
Either way do a search (using search in all files and folder including hidden) for *.doc file (assuming you use word) you may just have a new profile (i.e. new user added and old one is now hidden away).
