That FD must be on the absolute logical limit of capacity in terms of chain drag at the top and bottom of the cage with that wide ratio up front.

I've noticed a lot of French randonneurs have quite a large tooth difference between chainrings, sometimes 20 or so teeth. I guess they must have changed ok but @Woz I agree the fd is right on the limit. It does make you wonder how well the hand made front derailleurs worked, as some look very crude by today's standards.
