Unusual Kona models or colours

Could it be a custom made one if there was such a thing? My 1990 has an 89 frame number (think its a late 89 frame) with cantilever brake bosses.

I felt sure that Kilauea colour was called Munificent Mustard but only references I can find are post on here from 2013: munificent

and colour of 1998 Kapu on Bikepedia: 98 Kapu

All the brochure and sales bumpf from mine just says Mustard.

A frame can be made from a mixture of tubing. For example, a 1998 Kapu frame that I have on file uses Reynolds 853 Main Frame tubing, but the Seat Stays and the Chain Stays will probably be Reynolds 725, or even generic 4130 non heat-treated stays.



The Ritchey stamped Seat stays that you refer to are the Dropouts, not the Seat Stay Tubes.



The 1998 Kapu was manufacture in the Hodaka factory. Tom didn't build them, but his branded Dropouts and Tubing were used on many manufacturer's frames. Ritchey Dropouts were commonly found on higher end Kona Frames.

Edit: could you kindly post a picture of your Kapu, and its' serial number. Is that a picture of your Kapu in your post above chained to one of those funky bike lock stands, file number 20200831_172000.jpg? And do you know why it has a Titanium Frame Decal on the Seat Tube!?!

I’ve just picked up this, and have had it confirmed by konaworld as a 1995.5 cinder cone colourway after they sold out of the turquoise.
I’d never seen a metallic black one so I think it’s pretty cool.

Mind you..... did you see the unusual 1988/89 Explosif in Black with Yellow and Red Splatter that member BC posted on the "Kona's page" thread?

Blimey and Wow! This is the 2nd colour scheme that differs from the standard 1988/89 Pistachio with Yellow Splatter that I have now seen:

Love your special color comb. I have a custom 1988 Explosif -black with blue and yellow (deep space color). I got it several weeks ago in Denver Colorado.
