Ultegra 6700 bodge

Would it be possible to shift a 9 speed cassette with 6700 levers? I seem to recall that 9 speed can shift 8 speed if you clamp the cable differently, and the same with 8/7, but I have never tried it. anyone tried this?
I acquired 6700 levers and mechs, and want to put them on my 9speed bike, without shelling out for a new cassette and chain. Currently got the 6700 mech on the bike, shifting 9 speed, but wanted to put the levers on too, for the weight saving of carbon levers and to end the incessant rattle of my sora levers.

Apparently you can use the alternate routing method to shift 9 with 10 shifters but it isn't especially accurate

I tried it last night with an old mech, and managed to get it to shift 7, 8, 9 and 10 depending how far around I clamped the cable. I was surprised how much of a difference such a small adjustment made
