Its just a temporary thing. The industry in a couple of years will have the latest thing as being 26" no doubt touted as being more 'nimble' or a return to our roots or some other such bumpf

Not for some time. The bikes in Argos and Tesco are all 26 in wheel and i imagine those type of bso make up a far greater proportion of bikes ridden.
But by the time it happens, we'll be using hoverboards. I mean how many people lament not being able to buy tyres for their penny farthing?

This chap has been making 650b bicycles for around 50 years and was surprised that they are in big demand again.

plus, look at the amount of other weird sizes still available. 'retro' tyres will eventually disappear but most were cack anyway

Would respectfully suggest against stock piling your favourite tyres.
As a younger person in the early nineties I favoured the Specialized Ground Control tyre.Fast forward 20 years and I got into retro bikes and bought myself a Clockwork to renovate.In moving house I found a box of old bits in the garage which included three of the original Ground Controls,my spares from all those years ago.They were mouldy inside from damp and perished outside but I tried inflating one and the carcass immediately started to bulge alarmingly,so I scrapped them.My even older dad gave me his 1995 Proflex with original Panaracer tyres.They looked alright so I pumped the first one up to 60 psi at which point it split with a huge bang.
Bottom line is that genuine retro tyres are going to be thin on the ground and potentially unsafe,but modern tyres don't look too bad.I did a Cannondale Beast and put modern 2.1 Ground Controls on that and it gripped and steered great.
