Tyre / inner tube gremlins

Ok, was going to add to ededwards current puncture-related thread, but this is getting daft and I really need your thoughts/opinions as I'm starting to go mad.

The night before last I decided that the Zaskar restoration doesn't preclude me from riding the thing whilst I sort out the parts it needs, so fitted a pair of brand new Specialized inner tubes, pumped them up to a lowly 20 psi and went to bed.

Yesterday morning all seemed well, tyres still inflated, no nasty bulges :)wink: ) but got the bus to work anyway as was otherwise unprepared for the commute.

I come home to find this:

Tyres are newish DMR Motos (I know, I know, not retro ), and like I said, the inner tubes were brand new, boxed, and a half decent brand.

This is driving me mad - do I have garage gremlins that come out when I go to work and slash my tyres, have I somehow found a new way of fitting inner tubes that compromises their integrity?! :(

Help me, please. Or the Zaskar gets it.

Joe

Have you wheeled it over anything, 20 psi is awful low and the tube would puncture easily at that psi.
Other than that, the mark looks like you could have nipped it as you blew it up, or there's a fault with the inside of the rim, run the cotton wool around the rim to see.

Hi craiga, thanks for your comments.

Nope, hasn't been anywhere, literally pumped them up, popped them back onto the bike and and left it where it was - hasn't been sat on or wheeled anywhere.

Only stuck 20 psi in as didn't want the tyres getting distorted / flat spots from sitting there with no air, but unsure when I'll be riding it so figured I'd pump them up properly when I use it.

Thought I'd been really careful fitting the tube, putting a couple of psi in before I refitted the tyre, going round the tyre giving it a good wiggle to make sure I hadn't snagged the tube.

Rim tape looks a bit tired, think it's a Mavic one, big loop of yellow plastic that doesn't seem to stay put very well.

Could rim tape movement be to blame?

Will try the cotton wool thing on the rim, seems like a good idea to me, but fear the tyre has had it now with a split like that.

That rim tape can be quite hard, particularly when cold, I wonder if it's got trapped against it and that's caused it. Definitely looks like a nip somewhere.

i had exactly the same thing with a specialized road bike tyre, sat in the shed for a month or so no problem then one day flat and the hole in the tyre looked exactly like that. i googled faulty specialized tyres and the horror storys i found were not good reading. i got paranoind about the front blowing out (it has 120psi in it) so i swapped them out for gatorskins and no problems since. i tink they make good bikes and used to make good tyres but i think the old standards are slipping.

Cheers Chute55uk - can't anything online to suggest endemic issues with these tyres/tubes but it sounds like a plausible explanation to me.

Never had anything like this before, and I rode a lot as a teenager and had my fair share of punctures, but was beginning to wonder whether I know what I'm doing!
