Trek 970 - Aberdeen

Looks to be in very good original* condition. Wouldn’t take much to get it back to its original glory. £195 is perhaps a bit ambitious.

*the seller seems to think that the long list of ‘upgrades’ and accessories are the key selling points of this bike.
'Upgrade' often an inappropriate and misunderstood word... I always thought it meant 'better' and not as many use it to mean 'added shite'.

It appears to be well looked after.

Very well looked after indeed. Not a mark on those rims, original tyres, spoke protector still there and everything in top condition. My money is that it belongs to a wealthy chap who wanted to get into MTB, but never quite had the inclination to do so.

These US built treks are also hugely underrated IMO. £195 in this condition is a steal. They were not cheap back in the day!

Replace the grips, get hold of Turbo saddle and a T-bone stem (or similar) and remove the other bolt on crap. Job done.

They may even have the original parts still in the garage :)

Indeed. Lots of money in Aberdeen at the end of last century. My wife’s uncle was smart enough to open a bike shop in the city in the late 80s. It was a crazy time by all accounts - the oil and mountain bike booms colliding. There was a time in the 90s that he sold more Trek’s than anyone else in the UK and this 970 could easily be one of them. He also sold Muddy Fox, Kona, Marin, Bontrager all through the 90s. And one single Specialized Rockhopper but that’s a story for another day; maybe I’ll do a thread about it soon.
