Trek 970 - Aberdeen

Looks to be in very good original* condition. Wouldn’t take much to get it back to its original glory. £195 is perhaps a bit ambitious.

*the seller seems to think that the long list of ‘upgrades’ and accessories are the key selling points of this bike.
'Upgrade' often an inappropriate and misunderstood word... I always thought it meant 'better' and not as many use it to mean 'added shite'.

It appears to be well looked after.

Very well looked after indeed. Not a mark on those rims, original tyres, spoke protector still there and everything in top condition. My money is that it belongs to a wealthy chap who wanted to get into MTB, but never quite had the inclination to do so.

These US built treks are also hugely underrated IMO. £195 in this condition is a steal. They were not cheap back in the day!

Replace the grips, get hold of Turbo saddle and a T-bone stem (or similar) and remove the other bolt on crap. Job done.

They may even have the original parts still in the garage :)

Indeed. Lots of money in Aberdeen at the end of last century. My wife’s uncle was smart enough to open a bike shop in the city in the late 80s. It was a crazy time by all accounts - the oil and mountain bike booms colliding. There was a time in the 90s that he sold more Trek’s than anyone else in the UK and this 970 could easily be one of them. He also sold Muddy Fox, Kona, Marin, Bontrager all through the 90s. And one single Specialized Rockhopper but that’s a story for another day; maybe I’ll do a thread about it soon.

I’ve bought it and just picked it up. Cool story to it incoming once I’m home
Awesome. Looking forward to hearing more about it. My guess is it’s a 1990. Would be good to know if it was originally bought from Alpine Bikes.

Finally home, photos will be uploaded in 5mins. I randomly messaged the gentleman yesterday and it was still available. After a morning biking with my son, got home this afternoon and popped over to pick it up this evening. The gentleman was now 69yrs, turns out he bought it along with 3 other bike from Cycling World, George St, Aberdeen in circa 1991/92 (sorry not Alpine Bikes). He has owned it since new. Now, ironically I worked as a bike mechanic at Cycling World between 1991-1996 before leaving to setup another bike shop in Aberdeen called St Andrew Street Cyclery where I work at until 2000. Then I got a sensible job in product design at LEGO in Denmark.

He was rather sentimental about the bike and sad to see it go, but I cheered him up as its quite likely I or one of the other 3 bike mechanics built this very bike back then. My CW shop friends whom I still keep in contact with today and still cycle with them (photo attached), probably served him too. I shared the photo of the shop clan and it made him smile. The chap sitting on the Specialized bike in the photo, is Scotty and I still cycle with him today. His kids cycle with my kids too.

I'm not going to split and sell this Trek onwards. Itts going to get the full strip down treatment and rebuild to go alongside the Trek 8900 I have. I will source the correct stem and I already have the correct Vetta seat in my stash. Everything else looks pretty spot on and it’s IMMACULATE!!! He stored it inside his house, the tyres are original and perfect too. Happy retro find and thanks to OP (Walterscot) for posting as I would have missed this.

James

Amazing! It's found a very loving home. Great bikes, a friend had one BITD and it was super nice to ride. Trek made great bikes (and probably still do - but can't vouch for it) in the early 90s - Super reliable and handled really well, but often got ignored as a bit boring/middle of the road.

Proper time warp condition. Hopefully you should be able to track down a Matrix stem. 🤞

AND loving the old bike shop photo/story. Look forward to seeing this put back to it's former glory
