Transmission - which way to go?

Re:

Just snagged some M740 shifters on eBay, bonus was a 20% off voucher (yes I maxed it out with new tyres for my car, and cree lights etc).

I rode The Coyote on the road a few days ago and realised gripshift would never compare. i am so looking forward to decent shifters and at £16 they will be a bargain ~ assuming they work as well as they look...

Re:

M740 shifters have arrived, dirty and showing signs of their age but they appear to work perfectly. The cable housing screws look like they have never been touched.

I have removed the old frayed cables and cleaned the shifters up on the outside, but should I lubricate the inside?

Re:

M740 shifters fitted with new shimano inners, outers & ferrules. I really wanted the Gripshift to work well but I just couldn't get them set up as well as the Shimano.

Shifts are now instant, no grinding or ghost shifts, no missed gears.

Re:

The good old M740s are doing sterling service, better than I could have dared to hope as I was starting to suspect the Rear XT Mech as the cause of the issues.

In the end it was the Gripshift shifters, as much as I wanted to like them they are too slow/imprecise when going up hill for me. I always thought "Rapidfire" was just marketing bull, but having now experienced the competition it was a very apt name.

I wouldn't rule out the new Gripshift stuff with the dedicated Mechs, steel bearings and different cable pull lengths but I would need an extensive test before I could commit.

Glad to see they are working out for you although to be honest i'd only have not expected the rapid fire shifters to work well if they were damaged or badly worn out and i had the old type grip shift on my previous bike and they did work well with the tourney rear mech that i am now using on my rockrider but unfortunately they didn't respond so kindly to being serviced and became very notchie so i bought my existing Acera rapidfire shifters witch don't seem to suit my tourney rear mech that well but feel really positive in use .

I've not used the new gripshift as yet so i'd suggest asking other members to what they think and take it from their mate ..
