If you put pressure on the stay does it flex it open?The carbon probably plugs into the steel a fair distance, so unlikely to be a terminal problem, aerospace epoxies are the way forward if it's moving.
Sand off some paint and see how it looks - I had a similar crack on a carbon/aluminium Trek fork joint that was just in the paint in the end.
 
I thought the same. The paint is likely to become more brittle over time and so crack at the junction of materials. I would keep riding it, keep an eye on it and see what progresses. I'd be much more cautious if this was at the front of the bike.
 
Thanks for the replies chaps, maybe I’ll have a look tomorrow with fresh eyes. Thing is that it was really quite a comfortable fit and I’d hate to not get some more miles out of this one.
