Raleigh Randonneur 708 1997

I no longer have the bike (big mistake 😢) but around ten years ago I picked up this 94 708 Randonneur for around £40 in a bit of a state as shown:

After a lot of work I got it looking like this and enjoyed riding it but had a couple I rode more. I sold it to a New Zealander who wanted a good bike to tour around Europe for a year or two. He contacted me a few years later to say that the bike had served him well but that it had been stolen when he was in Switzerland and he needed the frame number for the police report.

That is a classic example of a certain style of dedicated bike user.
I'm surprised at the ever-ready battery light clips though, I would expect a bb dynamo.
@Guinessisgoodforyou your evaluation is invited.

Isn't it a shame that once it was returned to a decent state it became the victim of theft😪.
A well used bike is always nice to see, even if I don't care for the equipment. The restoration is lovely. Thieves need a proper ****ing.

It would make a bigger difference in Bristol if instead of putting stupid footrests at a couple of traffic lights,
20250412_093205.webp the council put some pressure on the police to treat bike theft as a crime.
Some people say now
"i can't have a bike, I've got nowhere to put it."
But you can leave your car in the street!

We fall over otherwise.

There was some discussion above and below this post:
They have carefully photographed thisView attachment 949924 to keep the victor meldrews of cycling infrastructure out of the picture...
My favourite was that the council had "liaised with local stakeholders", oh excluding the bicycle shop right opposite the moronic virtue- signaling clothes-rail🤪

Every road side should have one covering its whole length, with a moving hand rail, oh and a canopy - in fact each cycle should be placed in a conveyance, with four wheel and a roof …. and as that could be a bit heavy, the conveyance should have an engine and airbags. Common sense really …..
