I often wonder about the Tour De France and who wins it...
For example Wiggins is in the lead at the moment, however if every single rider had a transponder on their forks, and their times were captured acurately down to the second, would he still be in the lead?

Is there a reason why they do things like same times for bunch finishes and things like that?

Would it make it more exciting if it really was just a flat out race?

The timings for bunch finishes are done for safety reasons; otherwise, you'd have the issue of dozens of riders trying to sprint for the line rather than a handful - which wouldn't work (they tried, which is why the "bunch" rules are in place).

Same with the 3km rule - if a rider falls/crashes within the last 3km of a stage, they are awarded the same time as the bunch they were riding in, again, purely for safety reasons.

Also the closest finish between 1st and 2nd in Tour history is 8 seconds...
