Tottenham riots

In the past in Northern Ireland if the locals had a wee argy bargy the army appeared with armoured vehicles, baton rounds and tear gas. On mainland UK its up to the police with way less equipment, ;)

Au contraire, I was surprised to see a "Londonderry Ice-Cream Van" outside Leeds and Bradford Airport a few years ago. Apprently the Royal Ulster Constabulary G.C sold most of their armoured short wheel Land-Rovers to West Riding police, so they are available...

I thought that in Northern ireland they got way more hardcore stuff than landrovers? anyway they are shipping some of them over to london apparently...because they can't spare officers they are sending hardware instead.

RUC now called the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) was going to be called the Northern Ireland Police Service but was deemed to be offensive to Japanese Tourists (True ;))

Regardless of my feelings about how hard they should be coming down on these louts, I am one hundred percent convinced this is the natural outcome of Capitalism being the dominant influence on society, rather than the state itself.

I can agree with this. Full-out capitalism makes people harsh and selfish. Full-out socialism (thus communism and the likes) makes people lazy and takes away any ambition. Finding the balance is the hard part.

Gadro - For all my feelings on modern policing (both govt and sometimes police mis management) I have to say I am with you on what you say.

I also agree, this will fizzle out as people will get bored of it rather than scared by any 'force' possibly apart from the army (as they haven't come up against that yet).

I told a bunch of riot police today as they got deployed, despite the media, and whatever people are (often rightly feeling about not being protected enough) I respected them for going to the front line today and a lot of us did and they should know that. I wished them well and they were actually interested in hearing that it appeared.

The story i heard about a woman having her baby taken for 2hrs is just so horrendous I wanted to be sick. (I hope it's not true) , but it's interesting how much we aren't being told. We hear a lot about arson of warehouses, but so little of the stories I am hearing from people about people in their own houses in the middle of the night.

Good luck tonight Britain. My heart is broken because my country is broken.

Repect to gadro, we are taking rocks and anything they can throw, its not a pretty scene, but we will keep smiling.
