Top Speed, which Brakes?

These Paul Minimoto brakes are the ones I'm currently breaking in (no pun intended!), so far they are brilliant. Plenty of stopping power and very plush graduated response. Much love 💞

I'm risk averse. I went over 46mph once. Somewhere near Pitlochry. With shimmy 105 caliper brakes. I think that was my max and I was smart enough not to repeat it.

Don't ride faster than your guardian angel can fly. ;)

I’ve never been one for max speed either, chickened out today heading north off Sheriffmuir when I remembered the cattle grid.

I still remember one of the old boys in my club hurling past me on fixed coming down Whinlater into Portinscale.

Not anything so exciting here, flat out a 46mph on an mtb with a gale tailwind wanging along the A14 slpstreaming trucks, 48t 200gs chainset and 200gs cantilevers

Orrible ride back though!

And in the former yugolsavia, an equal amount of wanging down the s bends of the Julian Alps on a 5 speed peugeot with only weinmanns between me and ensplattenment

I topped out at 94kmh coming off the north side of the Lecht on a clear and calm day. No braking required, it’s a gloriously sweeping descent with miles of visibility and a nice run off towards the bottom. Coming down the Lecht is almost as much fun as climbing up it.

Best not to think too much about the speeds that can be reached with an inch of rubber and a plastic hat.

Absolutely gagging for a pint I looked down at me Garmin.. was doing 81.5 mph as I overshot the pub carpark, could only get 75 out of me Fizzy 🤩

Just reading about Fred Rompelberg (a hard looking nut if ever there was) who broke the world paced speed record in 1995 at 147mph on Utah salt flats, current record is almost 300km/h at 296 km/h (184 mph)

The history of motor paced cycling is pretty hairy, with numerous crashes and fatalities (often due to tyres blowing out at high speeds).

Frenchman José Meiffret, set a record 204.73 km/h (127.21 mph) behind a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL on an Autobahn at Freiburg, Germany, on 16 July 1962. His bicycle had a 130-tooth chainring and wooden rims.

Here's an extract from the historian Peter Nye:

"Motorpace racing was glamorous but dangerous. Falls were common, largely because bicycle tires tended to burst at speed. The riders wore neither helmets nor gloves. They depended on fast reflexes, the rude health of youth, and luck. Despite having all three, Bobby Walthour collected an impressive (or dismaying) inventory of injuries over his career: 28 fractures of the right collarbone, 18 of the left, 32 broken ribs, and 60 stitches to his face and head. Once, according to family history, he was given up for dead in Paris Parc De Princes and taken to a morgue, where he regained consciousness on the slab."
