For sometime I had fancied taking the train to Salisbury and doing some of the trails around the Plains and yesterday I got around to it. The original plan had been to ride along one of the ox droves then up to the other and back to the station but near the end of the more southerly one I was closer to Sherborne where I planned to visit friends on the way home than Salisbury so kept going.
The condition of the track varied between deep tracks left by 4WD and pretty smooth gravel, it was mostly dry though and a great ride often with views both to the north and south, it followed a ridgeway nearly all of the way to Shaftsbury.
Two-and-a-half hours and the joys of an old favourite: my 1996 Marin Stinson. I've had the bike for over ten years and still love its supple ride quality, especially after riding a pretty stiff alloy road bike most days recently. Most of the the original kit has been swapped or upgraded over time, but I'm starting to wonder about a drop bar makeover.
Anyway, it was a beautifully sunny day, but with a stiff, chilly wind, and 30 MPH gusts. I rode a familiar loop covering farmland, seaside and woodland, but the best of it was the seaside section: after about 10 miles of cycling into the wind, it was finally at my back and I shot along that stretch. And, like any civilised cyclist, I'd eaten my piece of cake by then.
Life-sized statue of Amy Johnson who crashed into the sea and died here in 1941:
I'm preparing ground for a new shed and digging up bamboo that has been in place for 25 years... I never knew that there was as much underground as there is above!! Anyway, managed to scoot out around sunset for a quick 15k blast. 18C when I went out, but the temperature dropped rapidly with the sun.
I love late Sunday afternoons in the park - packed during the day, it clears out about an hour before sunset, I only saw a handful of other people
Riding this one a lot a the moment, because it is lovely to ride, but also many of my others are packed away awaiting the new shed
Went for quite a long spin this morning. I visited the grave of a close friend who was killed by a car earlier in the year. I miss him a lot. He was always intrigued by my bikes. I was wondering what he would have made of the latest one. I know he would have enjoyed today's ride.
Some cracking pictures recently. I'll add a few more
Saturday morning desoltion, proper windy, 25mph with 35mph gusts. Massive resistence training followed by bullet from a gun downhill warp speeds. A great way to start to day
I checked to see if the escape launch pad was working
This morning, clear skies, fresh E breeze, 10mph or so. 7-8 degrees when the sun came out, much lower in the valleys, proper chilly. A magic ride with encounters featuring deer, free roaming cows, pheasants and a ton of rabbits. Tis the season.
