Today's Ride

Re:

It is always great to escape the cold, and as we have a couple of road bikes stored 130ish ks outside of Melbourne, it was time to do some summer riding.

From snow one day, we jumped on a plane, got in late, and once up, we pulled the bike boxes out of the garage and re-built them, it was lunchtime when they were ready, 30 degrees in the shade, but there was a 70k ride awaiting including the clime of Mount Tarrengower which houses a fire tower

Suffering from jet lag sucks, so we were up quite early and I had a ride mapped out. I had stolen it from the Condor Mavic JLT team as they are presently based down the road. Massive cycling area as the Aus champs are held not far away either.

Out we went, just to do a 100is k ride, taking in Mt Alexander, but within 20ks, I had my first puncture

and before we hit the base of the climb, I found my second !!!

Just before the climb, we came a cross a huge kangaroo just sitting in the middle of the road, but alas, no photo !!!

For the third ride, we drove into Melbourne for breakfast at Cafe Racer. Basically a meeting point for either the beginning or end of rides down Beach road. Some days there are hundreds, but we were not interested in just a 46k ride, we wanted to ride all the way to the end of Port Phillip Bay to Sorrento via Arthurs Seat, a tough 3k climb

After the climb, we went down a different way until we reached Sorrento. It was a nice town, but we rode straight through it until we came to the pier where the ferries arrive

We had come 100ks, so we had another 100 to go, but this time, we just stuck to the coast and enjoyed a tailwind, until it switched with 30ks to go !!!

Still, it was a great day out

Re:

Great shots Davroos-nice to see it's Summer somewhere. Today-Thursday-CK and I rode up to the West to do a little trail riding-we actually found some muddy spots on the Northern Exposure of some of the trail in the shade- but nothing deep or very long. Really warm for February, about 76 F. (24 C.) and sunny. We stopped by the MTB Museum downtown (it's not open yet) and ran into Joe Murray, an old Fairfax boy I haven't seen in 20 years- I took a snap with CK in the background middle...

Re:

You ran into Joe Murray!

Out of curiosity Pat, did you yourself have any involvement with any brands/bikes etc? I know you know nearly everyone (it seems) but I've never heard you talk about whether you had ever been bike trade related other than knowing the history of it in a similar way CK does.

Re:

I rode into London yesterday. No photos. I was looking down from Denmark Hill, London was spread out before me.
temperature something like 4ºC and at 3:00 pm all the cars had their light on! But I saved £2.80 postage by riding 40 miles to pick up a saddle I bought on ebay!
I said I would be there at 3:00pm-3:30pm, so the bloke says he will stand outside his office at 3:15. I don't have any contact details, apart from ebay mesages, I got there bang on 3:15 just as a bloke with a bike saddle in his hand stepped out of the building!

I was a writer for NORBA NEWS, I was the tech. editor, testing new products. I also helped Mert Lawwill develop and market his Leader Fork, which I came up with the name for. I wrote articles for English, German, and New Zealand bike mags. Being a Fairfax guy, I rode Klunkers with all the original guys BITD...

Awesome, I knew you fitted in somewhere, it just made sense that you did, I just didn't know where! I figured you just knew all the various known infamous people by being from Fairfax, would love to hear a bit about the Lawill stuff.

Re:

Today-Sunday-78 F. and sunny- 3 of us rode up 1000' the steepest way into the Open Space District (the way I sometimes take visitors, like I took Woz and Nik H. ). Then we went down into Cascade Canyon, along a short stretch called Broken Hand (where CK broke his hand in a fall BITD) to a stretch called the Rollercoaster and finally came out at the bottom of Repack, but from another hill. Then you have to cross the creek 4 times on the way out of the canyon-made 3, almost made the 4th :x and got wet feet for it, but all in all, a great ride...Oh, and guys, for the juiciest stories you have to come and ride here with me and CK...
