Today's Ride

Yes, around the Edale valley.

Beautiful. And not a soul in sight. Although I can hardly believe that no one else took advantage of that weather.

Just checked my map box, and I have OL1. Looks like the main trails are up Jacob's ladder, Rushup Edge, and Mam Tor.

Jacobs ladder is around the corner on the right in the first picture, the skyline straight ahead leads from the top of jacobs to Rushup Edge, which is the skyline on the right in the third picture, with Mam Tor next to it in the middle of the picture. Mam Tor ridge is in the last picture running up the other side of the Valley.

It was actually very busy today, though off the main trails it is a lot quieter. Mam Tor ridge would have been very busy today, it is on most days. Rushup Edge which is a continuation of Mam Tor ridge is surprisingly always quiet though.

Blue skies and glorious sunshine, all along the way. A toasty 9 degrees rising to maybe 10, cool breeze coming off the sea. I headed towards Sennen but on the coastal path, just to see how much is rideable (shhh, don't tell the walkers) after Letcha Farm. Answer - not much with one gear, so a fair amount of walking with beefy A'ha around some precarious cliff tops I found some farm tracks to mooch on around the airport before scooting back. Not a brilliant morning of riding, but a brilliant ride to soak it all in. These exploratory rides are dead useful for future walks, runs and rides with more than one gear, so it's all good.

Thanks for explaining the locations. A long time ago I got delayed and missed the start time for a group walk. So I popped into the local shop in Edale and bought an OL1 map. Like so many of my days out, I never really had a detailed plan, but at some point I committed to walking the entire Edale horseshoe. I don't think I've used the map much since then. In fact, my OL2 map gets more use than all the others put together, and I even decided to replace it a few weeks ago, as I'd had it so long it didn't have the Pennine Bridleway route.

Weather with mixed messages. April warmer and drier than May, really?

I think I've managed to claw my way over a fitness threshold, as I have consistently completed my morning commute in under 30 minutes for 5 days in a row.

I'm not venturing too far away from a routine route as the weather has been so unpredictable.
Today's highlight- a photo of the old path to the ferry over the Don at Mexborough. My Mum can remember travelling across the ferry as a child. She also remembers the footbridge in the background being constructed. In the background on the right are the remnants of the winding gear. A line ran across to the other side, the ferryman pulling the boat with the rope by hand. Unfortunately the gear on the opposite bank disappeared years ago.

Today's ride was dismal, dreary, miserable and wet... ...but that's enough about the Ridgeback. (CassidyAce pm me when you see this).

So much for staying under 30 minutes: That fell by the wayside. I lost nearly 4 minutes. I blame the parents.

Not a particularly nice day. The afternoon plagued by 'that fine rain, that soaks you through'. A Bit blustery, but hey, a ride's a ride. Better that than some of this 'ridding' I keep reading about. People are so intolerant. (See what I did there?)
Cooler than yesterday with temperatures about 8°c this morning, and 11°c this afternoon.

Not a very photogenic ride today: it was sunny for much of the morning but I seized the opportunity to cut the grass instead of going for a ride. After rain at lunchtime, it was dry but grey in the late afternoon/early evening when I got out on the bike. Time was limited but I managed to get 25 miles in. I took the Hardrock today: it's such a comfortable bike and it has a certain tough-as-nails charisma to its ride quality.

Anyway, here's something older that I passed: St Martin's Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest church in Britain that's still in use. Mary Tourtel, creator of Rupert the Bear is buried here, but the church dates back to the sixth century when it was the chapel of Queen Bertha of Kent.


I quite liked how even the rust on this gate had bright yellow patches.


Some cow parsley, er . . . just because there was lots of it.


And from one church to another: Barfrestone (or Barfreston) which might not be as old as St Martin's but is notable for its bell, which is not in the church itself but in a yew tree adjacent to the church. However, the bell is operated from within the church using a 'thingummy' to use the technical term; notice the metal pipe leading from the church to a bell.


According to the pretty pointless but non-removable little 'At a Glance' widget on Pixel Launcher, it was 13 degrees. Now, a weather forecast is a useful thing but why, oh why, does Google believe that I need a widget telling me the current temperature of wherever I am? I know what the temperature feels like because I'm there! In fact, it's worse than useless, because it ignores the wind chill factor. Primitive as it might be, at least that bell-ringing 'thingummy' serves a useful purpose.

No sign of raidan

Having kicked Covid firmly in the crotch and sent him packing I went straight into kitchen refit mode. Can't get to the bikes at the moment as the shed is full of tools and kitchen bits. I've begun swimming a couple days a week, which seems to be good for the hip.
Will hopefully be able to get back on the bike in the next week or so. Maybe there'll be a hint of summer by then!
