Only thing that puts me off is the guides....how do you attach the hose to a frame designed for disc brakes?

If the frame is designed for disc brakes then you don't really have a problem - depending on the type of guides, the hose either runs through them or is zip tied to them. If it's the through type, then you have to thread the hose through before attatching to the lever and bleeding the brakes obviously.

If the frame has brake cable stops fitted then you can use these. Probably the tidiest solution.

But then if your frame is designed for discs you would be running them!

I was referring to fitting Mags to Retro frames which don't have hose guides...how do you make that look tidy?

I don't have the detailed pictures in my photobucket, but I can upload them tonight; on my Hei Hei I used these:

and glued the tubes in to them with some silicon sealant to stop the hose sliding through them.

As you can see, no need for unsightly velcro wraps or zip-ties on my top-tube:

Well, your original question was "how do I attach the hose to a frame designed for disc brakes?" I kind of thought that I answered that - and then provided a link (and it works...) to the Magura cable stop/hose adaptor..... :?: :?:

And I have seen some people round here using rim brakes of one kind or another on frames with caliper mounts, so I guess there's no accounting for taste......

Same down sides as canti's and V's in that they destroy rims and can't handle buckled wheels.

I always felt they ate through rims faster than cantis or Vs, but since they don't really seem to stop the bike that much better, I could never fathom why... anyone any clues?

They're generally very effective and low maintenance when set up well, but I prefer the elegance and feel of the Ritchey V-brakes on the back of my FSR, set up with a nice soft lever feel on the Avid SD levers. Cables are also generally preferable to hydraulics for in-the-field fixability, in my book.

IMO the best rim brake evar! Seriously though they give the power of V's without the snatch I have experienced with the V's on my wifes Trek. Being hydraulic and having no stretch in the cables like V's do means that the feedback is excellent and therefore power modulation is easy. There may be a weight penalty but worth it IMO.
You can even buy my old Hydrostop Mountain set if you want as I don't need then any more.

Carl.

I'd second that. 13 years on my main MTB and verver needed anything more than a clip-in pad swap.
I went on a wintry ride in slush in January with pals - by the end their V brakes were wrecked as grit had stuck to the cables and worked its way into the inners, jamming the cables. My Maguras were still fine.

Maguras are the only thing which will reliably stop my tandem, even when going down a Devon 1 in 4 with a trailer in the rain. V-s are surprisingly effective, but very dependent on cable condition.

I would go for the hydraulics - when following the discussion I feel that Maguras are more exotic in the UK then here in Europe. If you like to have something else on your bike then Shimano or Avids Vs the Maguras are the ones for you :D
My Kula will have a set of them, little weight optimized ;)
To maximize the brakepower and reduce flexing always use a brake booster !

i've just bought my first set , havent fitted them yet (i don't have a spare bike for them lol) they look simple enough tho....

magura-a good idea gone bad

Do you have the patience of Mother Theresa :?

No...
Don't touch the maguras.

Yes...
Give them a go.

And they do look nice :D
