tioga disc drive

I had two recently. My thoughts:

Very (too) flexible. Imagine a blancmange instead of back wheel.
Very fragile - so easy to pierce the skin.
Few spares around
Nightmare to get a pump on.
Nightmare to keep true.

Still the coolest invention in mtb history to too expensive to risk trashing so i sold out.

Fyi I saw a video clip on youtube with tim gould riding one once.

Slightly before my time, what was the benefit of them, apart from being cool, which is just about the worst reason in history for the existence of anything??

benefit was status symbol.
Any other reason would mean we would still have them to buy now. (especially as the patent expired iirc ?)

You could make your own, buy some kevlar, lace it up on a jig resembling a wheel, then laminate the kevlar.*

As for the end bit (hub/wheel nipple) buy them from a trashed one or make something up ?

*think it's on mtbr or similar forum on the ether-web
