Those ****** at VAG!

Ford don't have diesels in the US.

(US emissions testing of diesels is probably 10 times harder to pass than any other emissions test anywhere in the world. The next round of new standards in the Eu are getting closer.)

Conveniently the UK will have left the European 'project' by then and they will be enjoying the company of millions of Syrians and not getting any help from their Eastern Bloc third world partners.

There was very little in the way of European badge engineering in the 1970's Seat/ Fiat/ Lada but not much else. Much was built under license.

Engines were everywhere by the early 80's (Douvrin V6) and by the late 80's it was the Fiat/ SAAB/ Alfa that was the most recognizable.

3rd gen Fiestas became Mazdas, Caviliers became SAAB and Dawoo and as development costs grew, it was obvious for manufacturers to pool resources.

Skipping a few years into todays market, its a bloody nightmare.

A Ford Ka is built at Fiat right down to a Fiat Key fob. The use of PSA engines by Ford is well know and the whiff of failures whafts still. The new Ecoboost engines are sludging up causing engine failure in the new generation models.

Next up, Mercedes A-Class. That manufacturer once leader in safety, design and just downright well built cars has given us this stinker.

The new A-Class is a bloody Megane underneath... Again heavily re-engineered but its there and the garlic will surely hit the fan soon, especially when the 1.5 diesel breaks?

Which is why a BMW is worth the extra £££ in my opinion if only so I don't have anything French
In the seventies the Rootes group sold badge engineered imps and hunters in the guises of Sunbeam ,Hillman and Singer.
British Leyland did this with the mini maxi and 1100 in the guise of MG ,Morris, Austin and Wolesley not forgetting Vanden Plas.

So not much

No because those cars are pretty much identical and obvious. I'm talking about to normally completely unrelated companies such as Ford and VAG churning out the Sharanalaxy or Ford and Fiat churning out the Ka 500.

The imp was always an imp no matter what badge was stuck to it, badge engineering is the secret behind the doors stuff of plonking one models parts into another and selling it as a completely new car. And dont think BMW are all sweetness and light either.

*And the sales of BL/ Rootes were MINIscule (see what I did there) compared to european sales of the cobbled together shit of today.

Misuse of statistics. The above models were sold in late 60s and 70s.

Back then there were 15 cars not counting those belonging to the queen in london and 6 in birmingham, not like now where every house hold has at least 2 cars. Look at youtube clips from then and see the roads were empty, not like the parking lot they are now.
