Those ****** at VAG!

"Thats why I drive a Mercedes (opens can of worms, runs, hides)"
Hell, not even my parents drive a VAG product...
It's just pissing me off when somebody messes with my job... believe it or not I actually like working for the Volkswagen Group design center and I have no intention of switching jobs anytime soon... but the way this crap develops it will most likely impact me in one way or another.

Didnt Lancia sell 2 cars to the UK market in 1992?

My car is old and dumb and I think the fuel pump works at 200hpa rather than the 2000(?)hpa of a current diesel.

And probably produces an order of magnitude more pollution at the tail pipe than even the cheating VWs do.

Why should it? Its a diesel, they are all bad. EGR reducing the combustion temperatures creating weird alkaloids and premature engine wear. NOX actually going up on some models despite the EGR. DPF failures left right and centre. Fuel pump seals entering the injection system. Early turbo failures. Whats to love about a diesel?

Should I have bought a new one over an existing 2nd hand one? Whom am I saving by doing so? My car cost £1300, it paid for itself after about 5000 miles. I'd have to do 100,000 before I started 'saving' with a new car.

My neighbours' brand spanking new Discovery sport with its 9spd gearbox can still barely reach 30mpg - how is that justifiable for a car built in 2015. How can any manufacturer claim to be environmentally friendly when they sell cars that pollute in every way imaginable?

Because that's one of the benefits of higher pressure systems.

You will note I said tail pipe emissions. Not whole life.

I would suspect that's down to a number of things, of the top of my head, 4wd, brick like aerodynamics, and a weight not dissimilar to an elephant, and being used in a completely unsuitable environment. And FWIW fuel economy is not directly related to pollution, only CO2.

Here's a picture of some of the most environmentally friendly cars:

Fuel economy is a nonsense if you throw the whole car away every ten years. We should make cars like aircraft, or maybe even bicycles, whereby most of the vehicle is retained and parts, even whole engines, are replaced as and when necessary.

There is a certain honesty about those cars^ you always knew they lied about mpg and wasn't surprised at 8mpg
