This is a stupid idea, right?

So I'm close to finishing this build and desperately want to get out and ride it. Trouble is, the steerer on my new forks is a bit too short - this much too short...

stem.jpg

The bottom of the two stem bolts tightens around the steerer; the upper bolt is above the top of the steerer. Despite this, I'm still tempted to take her out. This is a bad idea, right? Even though I've been waiting months? Please convince me of how likely I am to die, and that I should really wait another couple of weeks until I can sort some other forks. I think I already know the answer, I just need someone to tell it to me straight.

a very light road ride to see how it fits? that's fine

bumping up and down kerbs..... i wouldnt

mountain biking..... it will break and you will be maimed horribly.

If you ride that you will die a horribly painful , claret coloured, lingering "seems like an eternity" death.
The top of the steerer should be less than 5mm from the top of the stem.

for a very short test ride it should be ok, but i would only do the lower bolt up, tightening the upper bolt aswell might crush the steerer....

it'll do to prove a point and trundle up and down the road........but I wouldn't do any more than that!

What steerer do you need? maybe someone here can help.

As above really. Pretty sure I still have some pics of a guy at the local jumps who had his steerer like this, or rather I have pictures of the resulting mess before he went in the ambulance. They aint prety!!

Does the bolt that goes throught he top-cap still extend to the star nut?
If it does & it tightens I recon you will be ok , just dont go doing anything mental.
Its not big, An its not clever

Very short smooth journey in the park just to check things are working if you must. Otherwise I wouldn't ;)

As has been suggested you really need to get a longer steerer or new fork. Call it a n early xmas pressie to yourself :xmas-big-grin:
