I'll take your word on the reach and lever actions - it's easy to see that they would be different, because of the different geometries - bigger jumps on road doubles etc but I still reckon that if the mech matches the chainset then it can be worked by either road or mountainbike shifters without (significant) issue.
Heck, I'm sure I'd not have to look too far to find a hybrid OTP running a combination of mtb shifters with road mechs.
