The Ultimate XC bike ?

When I described earlier I liked mud plugging, it made me remember what I vowed years ago about UK XC riding, that vow was that my next bike would be an E-stay bike, with hub gears and disc brakes, all because of our weather and weather soaked terrain.

What would be your ideal bike design for what you most like doing ?
 
E-stay and internal gear :roll: :?: guess internal gear alone will do the job just fine :D

that mud guard would clog in seconds on the clay-gloop we get around South Oxfordshire. Would deffo need more mud clearance.

I just find the very idea of dragging a delicate rear mech through deep mud something daft. As I rarely go axle deep in mud, my thoughts were keep the gear and most of the transmission out of the stuff. And yes, some types of mud, the seriously abrasive wet kind one can still pedal.

Maybe it is me, but when in serious mud and the bike slews sideways and moves in a forward direction but not pointing forwards, I look at it as a marvel of traction.

I used to do the same in a Series One Land Rover too. Citroen 2cv next I think, if I can find one.
 
worrying conscensus! Internally geared (though yet to try), disk braked 120 mm front sus bike. Lots of standover height. Probably ti.
 
before I got my Saracen, I was initially tempted into the scene by the Nexus geared cycle, the Subway, as that I could see as a step forward, but apparently, it's heavy and there are issues with set up from what I understand. The Nexus, I believe , some have braking included in the design.

Someone has got to come up with a viable hub gear at some point, Sturmet Archer did it way back, with a three speed hub and I believe there are some continental variations with more gear ratios.
 
ultimate xc bike? for me it would be a pace rc100 with a bit more travel and panaracer smoke in 1.9 form. :D

It's already here, in the NuVinci infinitely variable drive hub gear. The DAF 66 of pushbikes.

The Nexus is actually not a bad hub, but they disintegrate after a couple of years. The Alfine is going to be better, but I want to wait a year or two before I take the plunge. And roller brakes are OK, I think my next bike will probably have them.
