The Phantom returns...

Re: The Phantom returns - formally 'Evening all...'

Cheers.

If anyone knows where I can get a bar mount/clamp for and XT 732 7 speed shifter I'd be extremely grateful. Bolt just sheared in mine whilst taking it off so its stuffed basically.

Thanks,

D.

What a beauty. Definitely looks the part now its got some proper tyres on :)

That paint work is stunning though! Its an usual colour combo. Is that something you decided on or was it down to Chas?

Cheers. It was all my idea. I was 100% all the to the purple at the rear which I always had a slight doubt about but love it overall.
I'm constantly amazed by all the love for it though. Cheers peeps.

Just need to sort my stuffed shifter now.

Re:

fab bike, what a beaut and i think the tyres look good

regarding the thumbies - get a wanted add up in the wanted section, probably someone will have one for you

its a very common issue with these mounts - the dx/deore version mounts are a bit more agricultural but dont do this when you tighten them up, so much better in my book

alternatively get a replacement set of here or ebay £30-40 should easy get a decent set (pm me if struggling, i have a few sets kicking about)

but to be honest the cheapest option would be to find a slightly larger bolt and tighten it in the hole. the alli is so bloody soft it will cut its own thread and hold no problem. I've doen this in the past and its been fine - you dont even see it unless you look underneath, and you have nothing to lose with regard to the current, broken mount.

Cheers for comments. Really pleased with the tyres actually.
Not sure I've been clear re the bolt.

Basically the one that tightens the clamp to the bar has sheared leaving the head on my floor and the rest of the bolt in the upper part(as you screw in from underneath) of the clamp.
So th threads are fine - they've just got a have a bolt with no head stuck

Does that make more sense? Will lob a pic up later.

Re:

yep makes sense - if you fancy having a stab at a DIY repair maybe carefully drill out the bolt stuck in the mount and go for there

else stick up a wanted ad - should be easyily satisfied i would have thought

I've put up an ad already - one chap having a look for one today - so may get lucky. Drilling out might be tricky, but might have a stab if nothing turns up.
Just wanna get a ride in now....

I guess it all depends on how easy it is to get to either end of the bolt, but if you take your time, use a hand drill (NOT electric) and a nice sharp bit, then you should be able to make progress.

If the broken bolt wasn't stuck or rusted but just tight, then you may only need to drill a pilot hole and then use some bolt extractors, which you can get on ebay or your local bargain hardware store for next to nothing.

The old thing has cleaned up a treat though and the new tyres look great.
