The Phantom returns...

Re: Evening all...

Absolute beauty.

Dont want to over-state this but you would BE MAD to get a respray. It's only original once and it looks great.

Good degrease and clean and knobbly tires and looks good to go to me.

Re:

That looks great!

I wouldn't touch the paint, except for any bare metal that might be showing

Re: Evening all...

Thanks for all the comments.

The reason for the stem change is purely comfort. It's a little too short for me so I find myself pushing back off the saddle. So it'll defo be up for grabs as soon as I have a replacement.

Fair points on the respray, I'll park that.
Forgot to add that a new saddle wouldn't hurt either.

I'll have a look for the frame number later on.

Cheers,

D.

Re:

Agree with all the comments - you'd be mad to repaint that beauty.

Great bike from a great builder, dripping in all the quality parts of the era - what's not to love

Re: Evening all...

Hello again.

Well I gave the old girl a good tidy up and her she is:

I'd really forgotten what a lovely bit of kit it is.
Will be sorting some new wider bars shortly (470mm anyone!!!) and obviously tyres, but beyond that it's just some trinkets as I'm done with blue anodised, and I think we're good to go.

Gradually aiming to replace most of the black stuff with silver though - canti's levers etc - think that's the way forward.

Anyone live in Suffolk?

Re:

That's a really really nice looking bike, was it a custom colour scheme? Did you choose the colours? I can only imagine it's a nice ride too.
I think it's crying out for some off-road tyres and a good day out in the country.

Yes I picked the colours myself. I was never settled on the back triangle but think it works as a whole.

Not sure I'm going to worry about this period tyre business - will just see what's out there at the mo I think(dives for cover).
Can't beleive old rubber is in demand too. Christ even the old Avocet O2 I've got on there seems like a collectable. It's a crazy world people...

Re:

Paintwork looks lovely, can't believe you were considering a repaint ;) A lot of period correct tyres, even unused ones unless stored in absolutely ideal conditions, won't last long. There are a couple of options for brand new remakes of back in the day tyres including Smoke/Dart and Timbuk II's if you want to go down that route

Re: The Phantom returns - formally 'Evening all...'

I've had alot of interest in this and a couple of requests to post progress etc, so I'll turn this into a 'look what exciting minor change I've made to get it back on(off) the road thread.
I'm afraid there may be some non-period content here, which may offend, so sorry for that.

So, I whacked on some Specialised The Captains to get me going, and they look spot on. I've got some bars in the post and some old Syncros grips waiting for them.
Next job is to put new ads on all around and change some bolts.
If anyone has some green bolts for the brake lever or shifter clamps that they'd like ot swap for blue or just sell, do let me know.
Same goes for bottle cage and stem clamp bolts.
