The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff chat and sales

The new shelving solution for my living room, 90% finished. I'm struggling to get wood for the two shelves I need inside the cavity. I have called maybe 10-15 wood yards and they all say the same thing: 'You can't get wood as big as that any more as the trees don't grow that big'.The two shelves I need are to be solid wood and to measure 533mm x 393mm x 20mm. It's quite annoying as the shelf they currently sit on are the exact same dimentions so I don't know what the wood suppliers mean, obviously wood is available at that size as the shelf I have is that size!

So I have a mini hi-fi all in one thingy and a pair of bookshelf speakers, bought new a few years ago to replace a second hand system that I'd put together cheaply. It is ideal in that is takes up little room, plays CDs, had a turntable plugged in and has DAB, and the speakers are decent Q Acoustics ones, but the bass is a little lacking.

The unit is a Denon RCD-M41DAB and the speakers are 3010i's, there is a Sub out, so I was considering getting a powered sub to sit under the sideboard it lives on, and my questions are: what should I be looking for? I don't want it to be so powerful that even on the lowest setting you can feel it, it needs to be fairly compact too - was looking at the Q Acoustics 3070S as I like them and it seems nice and compact, obviously I don't need to power the speakers off it, or is that a better solution?

TIA!

They're talking bollocks.. i bought a piece of spalted beech recently to make a bar top for a customer, it was 2m x 900mm x 65mm

You can snag them on ebay cheaper than the timber merchants, this would be overkill but you get my jist..

Has anyone got a well cheap portable mini disc player they'd like to go to a good home? Just received my old MDs back from a friend and I'd like to listen to them!

TIA

I wanted a little rack to put 25-30 CD's in.. something with a mid-century vibe to match my furniture.. alas, CD's wouldn't be invented for a few more decades.. i found a nice 'book trough' on Vinteriors
