Retro Newbie
Just found your forums today. I'm restoring a 1996 Trek Y33. I'm currently looking to replace the Judy front fork and the rear shock with Rockshox. I know I'll put more into than the bike is worth but its for a good cause. Anyway just want to say hello.

Poon

Re:

Hi Poon,

Welcome!
Nice starting point you got there :). What are you looking for to replace the Judy's with? Refurbishing your current set could be an option as well..
Enjoy your bike and the wealth of information that can be found on here!

Cheers.

I want to replace the Judy with Rockshox something current. I intend to ride the bike and would like to improve it as much as possible. I'm also looking to buy a Rockshox rear shock with a lockout.

Hi
Fraid im not clued up with sus but i do know you need to measure the shock out the frame eye to eye and the stroke distance of the piston, and find something modern with the features you want that is the same length and stroke..

Now I don't know whether this is true for Trek Y series of frames but I did read fairly recently something about it not being a good idea to use shocks with a lockout on old retro frames. The reasoning was that they were not designed to be ridden locked (modern frames are) and suspension parts could fail catastrophically if they were ridden locked out.
Worth checking this out before you damage your bike or worse yourself.

Carl.

Re:

It looks nice and original to me, I get the feeling you are about to spoil it :?

...and you might want to cut a couple inches off that seatpost or raise it before you cause some damage to the frame :)

I was working for Trek around this time and we had a lot of issues, but the rule is that if it is solid now it should be fine until it breaks. ;)
